Maybe you've noticed that your child isn't enjoying school as much as they used to. Their grades are starting to slip and they're losing confidence in themselves. Perhaps teachers have even called you to talk to you about your child's progress. If difficulties with one, or many subjects in school are impacting your child's education, then home tutoring may be the answer.

Quality home tutoring can benefit your child in many ways. Tutors not only teach the subjects your child is having trouble with, but they also encourage proper homework and study habits, good note taking skills and teach test taking strategies as well. A tutor who builds a good relationship with your child can also inspire them and give them the confidence to perform at their best.

Home tutoring can do all of these things, so it's important to choose the right tutor for your child. You can find tutors through tutoring agencies, via the internet, from your local school or from other parents who have home tutors for their children.

Make sure you select a tutor or tuition company that has Police Check or Working with Children check processes in place for your safety and peace of mind.  Ensure tutors have the educational credentials to help your child with the subject(s) your child needs help with. 

Before lessons start, pick a quiet and comfortable spot in your home where your child and tutor can work together without interruption from distracting noise or other siblings. Your child will have a hard time concentrating if they can hear the TV or if brothers or sisters are running around. The tutor will also appreciate a good work environment and please avoid tutoring taking place in a bedroom or in an area that is not visible to a consenting adult.

During the first lesson, your tutor may give your child a short test or assessment to find out where he or she is at with respect to their current year level to determine the gaps in their learning needs. You can help your tutor by gathering materials, like old tests, previous homework activities and reports for the tutor to look over. After each lesson, your tutor may give homework assignments as they see fit and should update you briefly on your child's progress.

Home tutoring is a convenient and comfortable option for giving your child the extra help and confidence they need to be their best. As their grades improve, your child will gain self-confidence and start to become more involved in class interaction and enjoying their school life.
